Nathan’s Famous - more than just a great love story

Once upon a time, in a land long ago and far away, the Nathan’s Hot Dog got its start. It was 1913, in a New York beach resort called Coney Island. Coney, then known as “the playground of the world” was a land where Americans rich and poor alike gathered for sun, surf and good times. On Coney, New Yorkers first sampled the young nation’s favorite new taste sensation---hot sausages in Vienna-type rolls with mustard and sauerkraut.

It was there that two young Polish immigrants named Nathan Handwerker and Ida Greenwald first met. He was a roll slicer and she a waitress at Feltman’s German Beer Garden, the very first frankfurter restaurant. She caught his eye, and it turned out to be a match made in hot dog heaven.

They soon married and in 1916, on the advice of a couple of singing waiters named Jimmy Durante and Eddie Cantor, decided to plunk down their $300 life savings on a frankfurter stand of their own. Ida gave Nathan her grandmother’s secret spice recipe and Nathan added good old fashioned American value, selling the country’s newest taste sensation for a nickel---half the price of the competition.

But it didn’t stop there. With the same old fashioned care they put into their hot dogs, Nathan and Ida cooked up golden crinkle cut french fries that they made from potatoes peeled fresh every morning and cooked in 100% corn oil.

As time passed and America grew up, the frankfurter sandwich came to be known as the hot dog and Nathan’s 100% pure beef hot dogs came to be known as the best.

Since then, a Nathan’s hot dog has become a delicious part of Americana.

Nathan’s hot dogs have been served to no fewer then nine American Presidents. In fact, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt entertained King George and Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain in 1939, he figured the best way to give them a taste of America was to serve them Nathan’s Hot Dogs.

Now there are new stores, many more new items on the menu and new generations of Nathan’s hot dog lovers. But some things have never changed. Like Nathan’s 1916 recipe and Nathan’s dedication to freshness and quality.

Thanks to a man named Nathan and his wife, Ida, hot dog lovers everywhere are sure to live happily ever after.

Nathan’s, More Than Just The Best Hot Dog.

We are hiring Restaurant managers for our Coney Island locations
