General Manager - KERB Berlin

Description

WHAT: General Manager
WHEN: June 2024
LOCATION:  Potsdamer Platz, Berlin
REPORTS TO: Managing Director - KERB Ventures
SALARY: 85,000 - 90,000 Euro

OVERVIEW

Having established an iconic Food Hall Market in London, KERB is bringing its street food magic to the Berlin food scene with the grand opening of their first ever European Food Hall in Berlin.

This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for KERB and will hopefully be the first step to delivering multiple future Food Halls across Europe as part of a wider global strategy for KERB Ventures Limited.

KERB is a business that powers other businesses. We focus on the incubation and growth of innovative, independent food businesses. We run brilliant street food markets, workshops, consultancy, bars, a food hall in Central London and have developed a growing, successful corporate catering company, KERB Events Limited.

We are a food-obsessed and people-first company who believes that everyone with a bit of spark should have the opportunity to ignite it. Be it food entrepreneurs or team members, our mission is to create opportunity and joy through great food, from the KERB up.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Our first hire on the ground in Berlin will be our most important.  There is a core team in London working on architecture, design, brand and comms, people, finance and marketing so there is no shortage of support for this venture.

As General Manager of our Berlin Food Hall, you will oversee the establishment of and execute the delivery of our Berlin Food Hall. Reporting to the MD of KERB Ventures, you will be fully responsible and accountable for this new opening across all areas of the business (not just the Ops), and its ongoing performance as a business.

This role will involve the creation of KERB Berlin (which is a new entity, 100% owned by KERB Ventures Ltd in the UK) and leading all operations and logistics as well all the support functions locally; working closely with finance, marketing, operational and HR teams to deliver a best in class food hall experience, and a profitable business with an exciting future.  You will also be expected to link in closely with KERB HQ where you also have support and from where you will receive cultural and business steering.

You’ll hold key relationships with our suppliers in Berlin and further afield in Germany, the KERB UK senior management team and all other stakeholders and partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead on the opening of the first Berlin Market Hall
  • Manage the relationship between all parties, including KERB UK, suppliers, vendors, staff, as well as finance, HR and marketing teams
  • Negotiating legal agreements with suppliers, vendors and contractors, with support from KERB UK
  • Designing and implementing robust systems to support the new business
  • Oversight of all commercial & compliance activities across the food hall
  • Coach, mentor and support all managers and heads of departments and central management team
  • Collaborate with the People & Culture team to develop and deliver recruitment, onboarding, payroll and reward & L+D projects within the business
  • Work with the marketing team to develop a robust sales and marketing plan
  • Develop an operating plan to ensure that the site can achieve financial budget
  • Ensure we are constantly delivering on KERB core Pillars, Mission and Vision and exceeding on expectation with engagement surveys
  • Shape and create a culture and environment where people want to work
  • Be a brand ambassador of KERB in Berlin

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • An experienced leader, with extensive experience in EU hospitality sectors with a track record of driving businesses through major periods of growth
  • Bilingual German and English speaker
  • Someone who thrives with self motivation, who can take ownership and lead a complex operation
  • Well versed in the legalities (licensing, food safety, H&S etc.) of opening & operating large, complex hospitality venues in Germany, specifically Berlin
  • Capable of building high performing teams from scratch
  • Phenomenal financial acumen, experienced in managing detailed P&L accounts
  • Valid passport with no restrictions on EU/UK travel
  • Outstanding hustle

This list is in no way exhaustive and the incumbent may be asked to perform other tasks to help out the KERB family (within reason!)
